Why Sleep Matters — and How CBT-I Can Help

  • Sleep isn’t just about rest — it’s vital for physical health, mental wellbeing, and daily functioning. Ongoing sleep difficulties can significantly impact mood, increase pain sensitivity, reduce concentration and learning capacity, impair driving performance, and contribute to the development or worsening of long-term health conditions.

  • If you or your healthcare provider suspect clinically severe insomnia, a comprehensive sleep assessment is recommended. Whilst allied health professionals can screen for insomnia, a full diagnosis should be made by your treating General Practitioner.

  • Should a diagnosis of insomnia be confirmed, referral to a clinician trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is recommended. CBT-I is the first-line, evidence-based treatment for insomnia, shown to improve sleep and reduce related symptoms without medication.

  • Our team includes mental health–endorsed Occupational Therapists and Psychologists with training in CBT-I.

  • Most people benefit from 4–6 sessions, which provide structured support to understand sleep patterns, address unhelpful thoughts and behaviours, and implement practical changes that promote healthier sleep.

  • We appreciate that even though we are experts of human anatomy and physiology, our clients are the experts of their own health and life experiences, so we aim to speak less and listen more
  • We are humble and brave, so if we aren’t the right person to help or we don’t know how to help, we will refer our client to someone who can, or do more research and/or training to be able to help next time.
